A breast reduction is a procedure that removes excess breast fat, tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Within time, most scars will fade; however, scar visibility can vary. We do recommend medical grade scar products that can help minimize the appearance of the scar and there are other laser treatments that can help as well.
Breast reduction patients can go home the same day of their surgery. Patients will typically need assistance at home for the first to two days; however, they can go back to performing moderate activities within a week to ten days. Vigorous activities such as sports and activities involving arm movement should be avoided for four to six weeks. Patients may return to all their normal activities in about 3 months.
For most patients, the results of breast reduction will last for a long time. However, gaining or losing a significant amount of weight, pregnancy, and breastfeeding may affect the shape of the breast and the breast reduction results. In these cases, the patient may choose to undergo a second operation to restore the breast’s shape.
